Many a times in my interaction with my peers, family, friends and people from other walks of life, I have heard the stray comment, ‘I cannot beat my own drum!’, ‘I cannot shout from rooftops about my work or my life’, or ‘It is not my cup of tea to be a salesperson’. However, at all times this statement or any other in this vein is the most untrue and incorrect of all.

If we examine ourselves, our interactions and our interpersonal relations closely, we will find that one way or the other, we are all actually selling one thing or the other.

For example, a simple suggestion, ‘Let’s go out for a movie’, is a pitch for taking up an activity, participating in it and deriving pleasure from it. At other times, we have pitched ourselves as a suitable child, friend, partner, spouse, parent, grandparent and so on. Hence, we do not restrict ourselves to only ideas and activities when it comes to selling; we even sell ourselves into relationships.

Thus, I believe that the thought that one is not cut out for selling is erroneous. We all have the skills and tools within us, as a part of our personality and genetic make-up to pitch ourselves and strive for the sale.

However, the motivation to drive the sales-pitch and the connection with the idea, concept, suggestion, relationship and other things that we are selling, are different and in varying degrees when compared with a sale tactic in a commercial setting.

If we are able to develop the same or similar connection and motivation for the product or the service of a commercial enterprise, we shall be able to perform well as a salesperson. With practice, we all can even excel at selling. It is merely a matter of transferring the skill from a social setting to a business scenario.

This worldview further encourages me to state that we should not view the vocation of selling as minor or unappealing. In most cases our survival depends upon our ability to sell. Similarly, the sustenance and growth of a business depends upon selling.

So, next time you think of selling, sales or a salesperson do it with a lot of joy and enthusiasm, and do not be shy to acknowledge and exercise your own skills of selling.
